Artist’s Statement on the Paintings:

My goal in assembling the paintings and music in this website is to show the viewer how a developing artist’s work evolves over a period of years by the use of different medias and through a range of styles.  Most of the pieces reference seascape subjects with the earlier work in watercolour showing a more traditional realistic approach.  The more recent work features the greater use of pastel, oil and acrylic and is stylistically more abstract.  The techniques involved also differ considerably – from the use of transparent watercolour only in earlier works employing the paper as the white highlights, to mixed media with both transparent and opaque passages and finally to the application of completely opaque pigments in the later work.

It is difficult to explain why such an evolution should exist, other than to state that I love to experiment with different approaches and new materials of which so much is currently available to the artist.  The evolution of style is more difficult to describe but I believe it has much to do with the challenge of bringing ideas and concepts into a visual form rather than replicating what the eye sees.  The challenge is to develop something new and previously unseen that captures the interest of the viewer enough for them to form their own interpretations.  I always find the interpretations of viewers fascinating and would be happy to discuss yours at any time.
